"Well you certainly do live up to your reputation," Roman said, giving her a well-earned compliment. He could sense something in her, some sort of inkling that she did indeed hear enough about him and underneath the obvious touch of amusement, he had a feeling she might have felt a little jealous and.. inedequet. Jealous of her friends and housemates that talk about him.. It seemed easy enough to put together. He could guess the reasons they would be talking about him and for her to feel that way. Did she not think she was as good or worthy as those girls? No. That couldn't be it.

Roman was always very intuitive but this was just plain perplexing. In his opinion, she had a lot going for her. She was beautiful, funny and intelligent. For one rare moment, he wasn't quite sure of his own unique way of simply knowing. For once, he doubted his own gut feeling because it simply didn't seem to make sense. The pieces failed to fit right but instead of dwelling on it, Roman kept the thoughts for another day.

"If you ever change your mind, I'd love to take you up. Nothing compares to that feeling. The wind in your hair, the view. It's amazing and everything just looks that much more magical," he explained, leaning in to rest his elbows on the table as he spoke. He voice gliding at a slow and steady tone and pace as though he were bringing the pages of a fairytale to life.

"Such intense freedom. Knowing that there is barely anything keeping you up there. Trusting yourself and giving in to that feeling. Every twist, every turn. Soaring then tumbling. It's amazing," he said, his eyes staring in nothing in particular as he was lost in memories of being up there before glancing back at her as he spoke the final two words. He loved his sport about as much as he loves his books.

"Maybe if I took you up, you'll get a better feel for it," he said, with a smile in the same calming tone before deciding that she might need more of an incentive than that.

"Might help.. For research purposes," he added with a slightly teasing grin.

Hermione blushed as Roman mentioned her reputation. She had a temptation to blurt out, 'please don't!', but instead bit her tongue and contented herself at squirming inside. She hated her reputation. It was of a smart Alec, a should-be-Ravenclaw that had no friends and was snobby. It was always an embarrassment when people recognized her by her reputation. Nevertheless she bit her tongue, but she wasn't surprised to feel her cheeks turn red. A natural reaction, she supposed, for anyone recieving a complement, and along with this she looked down, to see Crookshanks curled up in a ball, sleeping once again. He really was a lazy cat, or maybe he just got travel sick.

As Hermione had been thinking Roman's tone had changed. Still talking about flying, but in a way that made it almost seem inviting and a fantastic experience. She'd heard it from so many people, but she'd never believed it- mainly because they said it when they were in the hospital wing following a Quidditch accident. She raised her eyes, assured that her blushing had subsided and watched Roman, not just because it was... well... him, but also because the way he was talking, it was almost entrancing. He was talking, less to her now, more to himself- staring into space in the way she did when she spoke about the fiction books she read- as if remembering happy memories. It was enthusing, and it made a very good case for learning to fly. Which is apparently what he thought she should do too.

His tone changed to one more lucid, and she laughed at his suggestion. [color=indianred]"You could try, but I swear! I'm not really much good!"
she protested, still laughing in spite of herself. She could see he was serious though, and so quickly calmed from her quiet chuckle. He made it sound so appealing with the 'research' excuse, a teasing grin on his face that made Hermione feel self conscious.

"Well..." she started, "I suppose if we combine it with the former offer it could be really helpful in my studies, couldn't it now?" she replied, teasing in her tone too, with a friendly half smile adorning her lips. It was a very tempting offer, but would either of them hold it though? And what would she do when she made a complete fool of herself and managed to smash her spine or something equally as terrible by falling fifty feet to the ground? It was the sort of thing she'd do- knowing her- and the sort of thing she hoped she wouldn't. Yet another hint of a smile added to her face as she laughed at herself, once again.

Roman frowned at Miss Granger's reaction to the compliment. He liked making people happy. Any good emotion in others just made him feel better for some reason. Though negative emotions seemed to work just as powerfully. One say say that Roman was sympathetic but it was far more than that. Others might say he could really feel a person's pain and they're be right, because he did feel it. He quite literally felt it the way they did, which was why he tended to avoid people who might bring a situation down. It was why he chose always to encourage, to boost morale and make others feel good.

"Sorry," he muttered quietly. He had meant well. He thought she was intelligent and all but for some reason, she didn't seem to like and once again, he couldn't for the life of him figure out why. This girl was certainly different and he was failing to figure her out. He wanted to understand her as best he could but it was fast becoming clear that a task like that would require more effort than he had thought. Someone as complicated as her required more work.

Though thankfully that feeling passed quickly and Roman could smile again. This girl was so unbelievably complex. It was both intriguing and slightly frustrating but he was loving every minute of it.
Any Ravenclaw would enjoy a puzzle but a really focused one would enjoy a highly complex puzzle which was just what Hermione Granger was.

"No, you under estimate yourself,"
Roman said, sounding so sure of her flying abilities, as he leaned forward a little further. He had never seen her fly but he had allowed himself to so readily bestow his faith in her. He was eager to get her in the air. He wanted to share that excitement and that experience with her.

"Oh yes, very helpful indeed," Roman agreed with a grin. He had an ulterior motive but he did nothing to hide it. He knew she would be well aware of the fact that this would be as much for fun as it would for actual study.

Feeling a need to be certain that this 'research' would actually be done, Roman reached out as hand a placed it very lightly over her's as he spoke.

"I won't let you fall. You'll be safe with me,"
he stated clearly with honesty. His eyes bright and green as they looked up with her. He was honest and serious. Should she choose to actually fly with him when the time came, he would make sure she was well taken care of. It was the very least he could do as far as he was concerned. He was an easy person to trust but then with a need to follow through with his promises, he could be trusted.

[color=palevioletred]"Don't be sorry, I'm just not terribly fond of the reputation you speak of," Hermione murmured in response to Roman's uttering of the 's' word. She still wasn't sure why he said it, why he knew she was embarrassed about her reputation, nor why he seemed to visibly sadden as she felt it, as he said it, and looked a little better only a few moments later. But perhaps that was a puzzle to solve another day, once- if - she got to know him better. But there was nothing more fufilling than succeeding in solving a puzzle, and Hermione felt like Roman would make a very complex puzzle, one she'd gain extra satisfaction in completing.

Seeing Roman lean forward, Hermione's heart leapt into her heart. He spoke of confidence in her flying abilities, which was most flattering, but totally unfounded. She'd never even been able to get a broom to lift itself off the ground- the most elementary excercise given to first years in their first week, and it was embarrassing! Here she was, excelling in most other classes, and she couldn't even do the sort of thing that children brought up in wizarding families had been doing since they could walk! Absolutely mortifying!

"Hmm, well if you insist it would be so beneficial, I suppose I must accept your offer whole-heartedly," she replied to the studying suggestion. He had an ulterior motive, she could see it in his eyes and hear it in his tone, but she had no problem at all with it. In fact, her eyes and tone stated that perhaps she was looking forward to the true revelation of this motive, more than the actual learning to fly a broom.

Almost instantanously however, his tone took on a different meaning and the eyes which sparkled so deliciously before shone just as brightly now, but in a different way. Undisguised honesty, to make her feel comfortable, and his hand upon hers sent a jolt of electricity through her body. God.. I hope he didn't get that... she said to herself, forcing herself to look into Roman's eyes. "I trust you," she simply stated, smiling a genuine smile as she felt a movement by her leg, looking down to watch Crookshanks snuffle contentedly in his sleep. Obviously she could, indeed trust Roman.

"Good," Roman said. He cold tell that this would happen. They would see each other again and he would have the privileged of taking her up on a broom. He loved his sport and any chance showing another what there was to love about it was a gift. He was already looking forward to it and just this once, Roman allowed himself to wonder what that day might be like.

Roman had felt that connection the moment his hand touched her but he had to say what he needed to say. He knew then that he would have more reasons not to let her fall but he said nothing about it. This girl was different.. Perhaps special in some way but still Roman was determined to call this friendship and dismiss any chance of something more. He barely knew her and he wasn't sure that jumping into a situation with the level of spontaneity he had wanted would be such a good idea. No, Roman was a planner. He knew better than that.

He smiled when she said she trust him. It was a nice moment and although they had just met, everything felt right. It all seemed to fit into place and Roman wasn't quite sure if his feelings were his own anymore. It seemed temporarily too much but in a good way.

At that moment there was a sudden knock on the compartment door before it swung open while his hand was still on her's. Outside it stood a middle aged woman with a cart. Ah, the family cart full of candy. Every first year's dream, however this time the woman seem to blush a little at the sight. What had she thought? No, Roman an idea of what she might have thought they were when she smiled knowingly at them. This wasn't that but Roman didn't bother to say anything. The woman hadn't said a word about it, there was no reason to correct her.

With a cheerful smile, she did her usual thing of showing off the candy and beckoning them to buy some. With a smile, Roman glance at Miss Granger for a second before turning to the woman. Releasing Hermione's hand at least he reached into his bag and pulled out a bag of coins.

"We'll have all your sugar quills, chocolate frongs and Bertie Bott's every flavour beans,"
he said, handing over the bag of coins. The woman seemed happy at the sale as she placed the contents onto the table and scurried off. There weren't that much left but it was certainly more than enough. Roman knew that this was the last cart she would stop by otherwise he would not have bought everything. He wouldn't want to think he was depriving anyone else of candy.

"I hope you like at least one of theses, otherwise I'll be in trouble," he said with a cheerful grin as he hinted at the fact that he might be forced to eat it all should she not like any of it.

Was it just her who felt that? It seemed not to be, though maybe that was just her imagination again. No. Roman wouldn't be quite so stupid as to feel that way about her, would he? She answered her own question, but she wanted to believe it was true. A magic moment, the type of magical magic that couldn't be cast by wands or used in duels (unless you were Neville). But that was probably getting ahead of herself, so Hermione calmed, forcing her heart to slow down to a normal pace. She breathed and smiled, knowing she would have to force herself to think differently. Perhaps as a close friend? That would certainly do, if she didn't want more, she'd never had a close friend before.

The shock swept through her as quickly as the one from Roman's hand had as the rap on the door came and it opened to reveal a candy seller who looked like she'd just understood something she didn't mean to. Hermione's hand flew up as soon as Roman lifted his, being clasped by her other one as her head flicked round to face the woman, with her mouth forming a perfect 'oh'. Her heart was thundering once again, though she told herself she should just be thankful it was the candy seller and not someone like Malfoy or Harry Potter- both of who would have teased her mercilessly. The woman, however, after the slight indiscretion the lady just smiled as she gestured to the trolley of sweets. Hermione bet it hadn't looked this empty when it started its journey down the train, and that all the younger students had got to it on its journey down to this, the last cabin. She smiled meekly, clumsily fumbling in her bag to find her purse filled with the wizarding currency. Unfortunately, before she had succeeded in this simple task Roman had, with all his grace and ease of action, purchased more than enough food to sustain either of them for the journey.

She grinned and giggle as Roman commented on the sweets in front of them both. "Well, if it's to keep you out of trouble, then I must oblige and take a sugar quill- they are my favourite after all," she joked, reaching out and taking one of the sugary delights. She'd always thought it was appropriate that a quill like sweet was her favourite, when she was such the bookworm she was.

"Are they? Excellent," he said with a smirk as he push all the sugar quills in her direction with one quick movement. He didn't mind them but it was the chocolate frogs he was after. The beans were good too but he wasn't quite courageous enough to try them all in one sitting. Though being in the house she was in, Roman assume she might be able to out-do him in that respect.

Picking up a chocolate frog, he tapped it with his wand before opening it. Moving frogs were never all that appealing. Keeping his wand handy at his side, ready for the next frog it took a bite before noticing Ruby with an inquiring look. With a smile he pulled out a small container of cat biscuits and placed it on the table after removing the lib. Watching the kitten scramble to climb the table he laughed a little as she finally made her way to the biscuits. All seemed well at that moment and Roman hadn't much more he could ask for.

Picking up the card he smiled and dropped it back down. He didn't bother so much with collecting them, at least not as much as he did when he was young but he still kept all his cards, sorted neatly and chronologically in a file. He was organized and he liked things to be just right but then this wasn't an uncommon trait among the Ravenclaws. A trait he thought Miss Granger might share as well.

"Would Crookshanks like a snack?" he asked. It was not so much a question to Hermione as it was a way to get her cat's attention. Most cats knew their name and hearing it might have alerted him to the presence of home made biscuits on the table. Yes, home made in teh muggle way. Roman liked to experiment and as part of his research for his muggle studies class, he had taken cooking lessons. It had been a little intimidating at first, a class full of muggles. He feared he might say something to give himself away of that they might mention something that was common knowledge to them and he would be completely at a loss. Though thankfully it all went well and Roman was looking forward to learning to do other things the muggle way. It was all terribly fascinating to him.

Hermione smiled shyly as she chewed on the hard sugar of the quill, starting from the top of the streaked feather. She watched as Roman chose a chocolate frog- wisely choosing to leave the 'Bertie Botts Every Flavoured Beans'. Hemione sometimes ate them, but it was always a risky business- as she had discovered on the first train she took to Hogwarts, eating several nice ones, then one that tasted of muggle plastic. And that wasn't an experience she really wished to repeat. The sugar tasted nice, as her sucking paid off and a piece of softened sugar snapped off in her mouth and she looked at the disfigured quill, now with a rather large square chunk missing from the top. She giggled slightly, before beginning to suck at it again.

She watched Roman and how he went about with the chocolate frog, tapping it to paralyze it before he ate it. "Hmm, I wish more of my housemates would think of doing that," she mused, smiling slightly at the thought. Being the idiots her housemates were, during times of high spirits they'd attempt to eat the frogs whilst they were 'alive'. It was both interesting and hideous to behold- the fight between man and... amphibian- yet still someone trying to eat something alive while it still was so. It was also usually quite messy- the frogs half eaten jumping into walls or smashing into chairs (unless, of course, their legs were eaten first). Truly disgusting, and when that happened, Hermione either sought refuge in her dorm, or in the library.

When Roman opened the tub containing cat biscuits, Hermione felt Crookshanks stir beside her. His nose sniffing, his eyes interested- yet not actually moving; being the polite cat he was. However, when Roman invited him, disguising the invitation to Crookshanks as one to Hermione, he uncurled himself and hopped swiftly onto the table, tucking into the biscuits with Ruby. Hermione smiled and rolled her eyes at her cats behavior. The quill was rapidly disappearing from under her fingers as she chewed on it thoughtfully, watching out the window as the fields went by, faster and faster. It was getting darker now, obviously quite some time had passed since they had got on the train, or perhaps the clouds were just darkening the sky. What muggles called 'Global Warming' was apparently changing the weather patterns, and Hermione didn't know if she could really stand much more rain at Hogwarts- in the Scottish Highlands, a place she regarded as the wettest on mainland Britain.

Roman smiled when she spoke. It always seemed logical to him to stop it moving before even taking it out of the packet. They did have one good jump in them after all and that was all it took for it to get out of your hands and for you to be left without a yummy snack. Eying the Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans Roman decided that they would be next.

Yes, daring to eat the jelly beans might prove to be a regretable mistake but Roman had done far more dangerous things. Quidditch for one could be potentially fatal and the odds more than double if the weather got bad enough so how bad could some jelly beans really be?

"I don't really like the idea of moving food," he said, scrunching up his face a little at the very thought of it. Despite only being chocolate, the fact that they could move only made him feel like it might be alive and that thought was kind of revolting. Perhaps Slytherins might enjoy it for the imitation cruelty and Gryfindors might enjoy it for the challenge it afforded them but he only ever found it to be problematic. Most Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws tended to prefer going for the easier option.

In a fit of courage, Roman picked up a packet of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans and opened it before placing it back down again at the middle of the table, deciding that he would work up to picking one out since his last experience had been less than pleasant. For a second he wondered if he might be able to persuade Ruby to have one but quickly decided that it might actually be animal abuse. They weren't really that bad and Roman did enjoy them but he would often work his way up to it, to do it in his own time just as most others did.

Roman smiled when Crookshanks jumped up onto the table. He had always liked cats and kneazles. They were just such intelligent animals. Perhaps it was out of something in common. Either way, he had always thought they were great but the object of his attention was neither Crookshanks nor Ruby. It was Hermione. Turning back to Hermione he beamed at her, still proud of his handy work.

"I baked those myself you know. In a real oven and everything," he said. He still had no idea of what her heritage was. He knew he wasn't pureblood but he had assumed at least half-blood, meaning that she would likely understand the accomplishment. Though being mugleborn it seemed being amused my the the option she would end up taking.

"Mmm." Hermione agreed with Roman's idea of not liking moving food. She just wished her housemates felt the same way, as she'd thought previously and had no particular desire to remember the high spirited occasions once again. "Don't suppose you could try and influence some of my Gryffindor classmates to feel the same way?" she asked, a slight chuckle in her voice as she said it. She chewed more on the sugar quill, standing up and moving over to the window where she leaned against the windowsill, before stretching up to close the window pane.

The sky was dark outside, and fields and mountains were all the eye could see. That, along with the end of the sweet trolley signalled that they were relatively close to Hogwarts at the present moment, and Hermione smiled. She was oddly tired now they were nearing the end of the peaceful journey, but she forced herself to hobble (gracefully- she hadn't fallen over yet!) round to her handbag.

"It looks like we're nearing Hogwarts by the way, I'm gonna be back in a sec," Hermione excused herself, grinning over her shoulder at Roman's revelation that he made the biscuits himself, the muggle way she was so used to doing. It was surprising though, since most wizards had never even heard of cooking things the muggle way- hell, most wizards only liked muggle clothes.

She changed quickly, in the little booths provided at opposite ends of the train for such purposes, and returned minutes later, changed and looking reasonably appropriately dressed for school. She'd taken off the high heels, replacing them with sensible black pump shoes, ones she could actually walk in. It meant she could walk faster, and so she almost ran back to the cabin, not that she was nervous or particularly desperate for Roman's company. He was interesting, and despite their apparently lengthy conversation in the carriage, she didn't know that much more about him than she had when he first entered the carriage- apart from the fact he had a cat and was so obviously a pureblood it wasn't true.

She slid the glass door open once again, slipping inside before gently closing it again, and throwing her bag down on the seat next to Crookshanks' place. He was still on the table, cooperating with Ruby for the biscuits, and Hermione smiled. "You'll have to give me the recipe, whenever I try to make biscuits I fail miserably- even if my mother has shown me countless times," she said, laughter in her voice again. She'd had a feeling that the question was probing her to discover her 'blood status' as people referred to it here, and after that she supposed there could be little doubt. She didn't look like a pureblood at all, didn't act nor move like one- if Roman was anything to go by.
